Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Screed Operator (Back End Operator) to join our paving team for the upcoming season. In this role, you’ll be running the screed on a brand new 2026 Wieler 385B paver, working alongside skilled crews on a mix of commercial and residential paving projects across Southeastern Wisconsin. This is a union position with Local Operating Engineers 139, offering competitive union wages, full benefits, and a Monday–Friday schedule with no nights or weekends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate hydraulic valves and manual handwheels to adjust screed height, width, slope, and crown to meet project depth and grade specifications
  • Monitor mat texture, density, temperature, and depth using depth gauges throughout each paving pass
  • Coordinate closely with the paver operator and foreman to ensure consistent mat quality and smooth ride
  • Install and remove screed extensions as required by job conditions
  • Install, calibrate, and remove auto-grade paving electronics (e.g., Moba, Topcon, or similar systems)
  • Signal the paver operator to start, stop, and adjust speed as needed
  • Perform daily preventive maintenance on the paver and screed; clean excess asphalt from equipment at end of shift
  • Assist with site work including shoveling HMA, setting and checking grade stakes, and traffic control as needed
  • Load and unload materials and equipment; assist with general job site setup and cleanup

Requirements

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience operating an asphalt screed, specifically in the back end / screed operator role
  • Strong understanding of asphalt mat properties, grade control, and the ability to read and interpret construction plans and depth specifications
  • Experience with commercial and/or residential paving crews
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly throughout the shift
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and around hot mix asphalt (HMA) at temperatures up to 350°F
  • Reliable transportation to job sites across Southeastern Wisconsin
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening and physical

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating a Wieler, Vogele, or comparable commercial paver screed
  • Familiarity with auto-grade electronics systems (Moba, Topcon, Carlson, or similar)

We are looking to hire an experienced Concrete Finisher who can expertly pour, level, and smooth concrete on a variety of surfaces including sidewalks, curbs and gutters, stairs, and flatwork. You may also be required to set the forms that hold the concrete in place, patch existing surfaces, cut expansion joins, and monitor the curing of the concrete to ensure a high-quality finish.
